Your ego locks you into a fixed identify that perpetuates misery and pain. Your task is to release it so that you can realize your essential nature as the pure mind beyond the ego.

Unless you have the pure mind, our vision is clouded, like the mirror that is covered with dust. We see only inequality among phenomena, and we discriminate on that basis.
